One person said that they’d had 11 unauthorized charges, each for $250! Another said that their laptop was hacked, and they were contacted by someone claiming to represent Direct Express.

Reports of calling Customer Service with 3 hours waiting, another with 3 weeks of waiting for a replacement card. 

The Better Business Bureau acknowledged 771 complaints thus far.

Also, the Social Security Office has been overwhelmed with a plague of complaints about lost money in many peoples’ Direct Express card accounts linked to their Federal benefits payment plans. This has led to a few class-action suits being filed.

The federally funded Direct Express has been under rigorous scrutiny because of fraudster criminals illegally using cards and draining the accounts of money that do not belong to them.

Not only does this come as a shock, but total disregard by Comerica in blatantly not alerting the victims of accounts being hacked. Many instances were waiting months to alert only a few of the victims to restore their benefits, leaving most of the accounts at a tragic loss to the main source of their income.

This has devastated many families across the country as they are on a fixed income and desperately need this money.

These hacked card reports regarding a company that got Federal money to operate but its failure in areas concerning:

Federal Law And Reporting Your Lost Or Hacked Card Loss With Fraud Liability

Under the federal law known as Regulation E, cardholders who dispute a transaction have only 2 business days after learning of their loss cannot be held liable for more than $50.

Furthermore, those who dispute a charge within 60 days cannot be held liable for more than $500.

However, the United States Treasury Department, which oversees the management of the Direct Express card was able to negotiate additional protections for Direct Express.

Therefore, Direct Express cardholders get an additional one-month cushion.

The bottom line is Direct Express cardholders have 90 days to report any unauthorized transactions and not be liable for more than $500.

Take Steps To Protect Your Direct Express Card From Unauthorized Use

Always protect your personal information and your card.

Don’t give out your card number, Personal Identification Number (PIN), or security code to anyone. This is because Direct Express Customer Service will not contact you to ask for this personal information so if anyone calls you, emails you, or texts messages you to ask you, you will know it’s someone trying to scam you.

Why Would I Put A Lock On My Direct Express Card?

The best reason to put a lock on your Direct Express card is that you have misplaced your Direct Express Debit Card. 

For the security of your card and to prevent unauthorized transactions or ATM withdrawals while you look for it, the best plan of action is to put a lock on it. 

To lock the card you can go online at EIPCard.com or call This can only be done by you can lock it by logging online at EIPCard.com or by calling Customer Service at

Discontinue Current Card And Get Replacement Card

Contact Customer Service immediately

  • If you need a replacement card
  • If your card has been hacked
  • If your card is lost or stolen
  • You will be assisted to cancel the current card and a new card can be mailed to you for your peace of mind 

You will need to call Customer Service because Direct Express won’t allow this to be done online. So make a report with Customer Service.

When you reach Customer service, they will verify your identity, they will then proceed to cancel your current card and finally, they can send you a new replacement card.

When your new Direct Express card has arrived in the mail then, call the Customer Service Department for Direct Express to activate your new card. Look on the back of your Direct Express card and you can find the phone number.

Any funds from your old card will be put on your new replacement card.

Fees and Shipping Details Of Replacement Card

This is how you can get a new card from Direct Express. You are allowed 1 Free replacement card every year. If additional replacements are needed within the calendar year, a lost card fee of $4.00 will apply. 

United States Postal Service first-class mail will deliver your new replacement card within 7-10 days.

To expedite this delivery, you can alert Customer service when you call that you wish expedited shipping. A $13.50 fee will be charged to your Direct Express debit card.

Unfortunately, for your new card in the mail, Direct Express has no tracking number. 

After 10 business days, if you have not received your card in the mail, call 888-741-1115 to speak to Direct Express Customer Support and explain why you have not gotten your card yet.

How To Cancel Card

If you don’t like your card, you can close your account at no charge by simply calling 1 (888) 741-1115, and customer service will assist you.

And it is recommended to enroll in the direct deposit program for future payments if you decide to close your account by simply calling 1 (800) 772-1213 and the Treasury’s GoDirect Hotline will assist you or by internet at   www.godirect.org
