Every bank transaction requires two pieces of information to identify the customers: an account number and a routing number.
A routing number is a nine-digit code that identifies the financial institution where you opened your account. While an account number is personal and unique to each account holder, the routing number is the same for all the bank’s customers and is often publicly displayed on their website. A routing number is also known as an RTN, an ABA routing number, or a routing transit number.
Routing numbers are required for reordering checks, paying bills, establishing a direct deposit, making international money transfers, and paying taxes. A bank can have several routing numbers for different types of money transfers.
Does Direct Express Have A Routing Number?
Although Comerica Bank who is the Direct Express card issuer has a routing number, Direct Express doesn’t make this number publicly available for its cards. Similarly, Direct Express account numbers are not shared with the customers. That means that you have to use your Direct Express card without having access to your account and routing number.
Why Can’t I Use A Direct Express Routing Number To Pay Bills?
Since Direct Express doesn’t publicly disclose its routing number, you can’t use it for paying bills. Therefore, if you would like to make a bill payment using your Direct Express card, you should always first check the company’s website and see what details they will need. If the company requires information such as your account and routing numbers, you won’t be able to pay with your Direct Express card.
You can pay your bills online with your Direct Express card as long as the company you are paying accepts MasterCard debit cards. In order to be able to use your Direct Express card to pay bills online, the company must process the payment like a credit card transaction. That means that they will ask for your card number, expiration date, and CVV number (the 3 digit number on the back of your card).

How Do I Set Up Auto Bill Pay With My Direct Express Card If I Can’t Use A Routing Number?
Automatic bill pay is a service that allows you to set up recurring transfers or payments from your card. You can use auto pay for all your monthly bills such as phone, tuition, cable, utilities, mortgage, and other regular payments.
Automatic bill pay is convenient because you don’t have to remember every due date and log on to several different websites to make payments. Automating online bill payment is a great way to pay bills on time and avoid incurring late fees.
To set up an auto bill pay with your Direct Express card, log in to your account on the Direct Express website or mobile app and follow the online bill pay instructions. The funds from your card will be used to automatically pay the amount that is due each month.
If you wish to set up automated bill pay, make sure to always keep enough available funds in your account. It is also a good idea to sign up for Direct Express low balance alerts.
